I See Dead People

posted by Momo Fali on January 4, 2008

Right around Christmas, my five year old son suddenly became fascinated with death. It started when we were talking about his grandparents and he asked where their parents were. I explained that those were his great-grandparents, and that they had all died and are in heaven now. When he asked why they died, I didn’t want to say some of them had been sick, since we often say we’re sick. So I told him that they died because they were old.

So, it shouldn’t have been any surprise when he pointed at an elderly woman a few days ago and said, “You died! You have white hair and that means you’re old. You died!”

But she was hard of hearing and just gave him a big smile, and now he thinks he’s cheering up retirees by telling them they’ve passed away.

    Hysterical!!!

I’m not very careful about what I say to my children, but I over explain everything so I think it evens out. πŸ™‚

Muuuwwwaaaaaahaaaaaaaaahaaaaaaaaahhhhaaaaaaaaa! Glad it’s not just my kid. We were at Target when an older woman had a stroke right. in. front. of. us. My 3 yr old an me. She didn’t make it, but those Target people work fast!! If you’re going to stroke out at a retail store, I recommend Target :-).
So we discussed, she’d already lost one grandmother and an aunt and a great grandfather in a 7 month period, so death was no stranger.
So for the next month every old person we saw, ” are you gonna die like the lady in Target, you have white hair and you’re old.”

    Oy.

My four year old asked me if I was old the other day, I asked her if I LOOKED old. Her reply-“Yes, you look old all over. Are you going to die soon?” Ouch. Sometimes chidrens’ honesty is NOT refreshing.

I have a friend who’s great-grandmother, on her 102nd birthday, told everyone that all she wanted that year was to die. So, that might have worked to pick up her spirits a bit.

    Too funny!
