To Infinity and Beyond

posted by Momo Fali on April 23, 2009

Although it has never been diagnosed, my son suffers from some OCD tendencies. I have no idea where he gets it. Hold on, I have to go straighten my underwear drawer.

One aspect of this is that he gets fixated on shapes and numbers. For a while, his favorite number was 109. He would use it to measure time and count toys, and when he would eye the clock shortly after lunch to see it reading 1:09, it gave him quite a thrill.

Luckily for us, last year he took to the number 10. This made it easier when we had to take 10 steps from the house to the garage, or give him 10 kisses each night. After 109 kisses on a kid’s forehead, your lips start to get numb.

But recently, the digits have been taken to a much higher level. His new favorite? Infinity. And, although I know infinity isn’t a number to which you can count, I will never tire of hearing him say, “Mom, I love you to infinity.”

What a very sweet little guy you have there! 109 kisses? For reals?? I can barely hold mine down for 1 or 2!

  • Single Parent Dad

You do realise that 109 adds up to 10? This kid is smart.

  • Tom

Much better than being loved to 109.

  • Mrs. Schmitty

    Infinity is a great number.

    Aww…

With my kid its just counting, period. I mean, I’m proud that at four he can get to 100 and keep going, but holy hell, it keeps him from sleeping!

LOL – and here we thought 109 kisses was a lot 😉

  • Otter Thomas

Sweet as usuual. Maybe his next number will be infinity plus one.

Oh my gosh, my nephew tells me he loves me to infinity and beyond every time I see him. He, however, is just obsessed with Buzz Lightyear.

  • James

    That’s a lot of love.

  • Mark

Interesting how well this worked out! Love infinity.

  • O My Blog!

Love IS infinite, how very appropriate!

  • Ashley

    That’s what I say to my husband…

“I love you to infinity and beyond…”

His reply: There’s no such thing.

    Thanks for the moment, dear.

That sort of love can right even the most grievous wrongs. Lucky Mom. ~Mary

  • BusyDad

That is indeed awesome. But you know what else would be just as cool? To hear “I love you to 11.” Rock on!

  • Liz Colosimo

My son has taken to telling me he loves me to infinity plus one. It’s these moments that are such gifts!

    Aww.. how cute is he.

  • Heather

he is incredible. really, he is.

it’s been studied and reported that up to 75% of 2 to 4 year olds “exhibit normal age dependant OCD which are usually gone by middle childhood.” Around age 6.

I just read about that in my child development class. But honestly, if it were my kid I would just spike his punch with equal parts Ritalin and Prozac. Yum.

That is so sweet. My kids have been obsessed with infinity for over a year, or perhaps infinity years. It’s just soo big and cool.

  • WeaselMomma

    How sweet.

He’s adorable. Hopefully he’ll hang on to that one for a while!

  • newnorth

awww, now that makes the 109 kisses worth it 🙂

  • Bean

Aw! No, a mother would never tire of that!

Your son … what a total SWEETHEART; he was a DOLL in his showering of birthday wishes and affection! It helped make my day!

  • Mrs4444

Sweet. Reminds me of the year that Kyle insisted on counting every chew it took in a single bite. He counted everything. He grew out of it. I think as we grow up, we all have little OCD tendencies now and then.

  • Bee and Rose

Oh yeah…he’s a keeper! That is a warm fuzzy for sure!

  • Rhea

    Oh, that’s super sweet!!

I knew I was in trouble when m y not even two-year-old was lining rows of cars up obsessively in a toy store…he has a little OCD but not so bad that it interferes with his life.

  • Rebecca Anne

Thats very sweet! I have a daughter with a touch of OCD herself. Don’t worry, there are ways to work around it! Plus, it keeps things interesting in the house. Kisses specifically!

  • MommyTime

That seems cute more than annoying (of course, I don’t have to live with it). I’m impressed that you went for 109 kisses every night, though. That’s a serious commitment.

  • the planet of janet

i think infinity is the perfect number.

  • Missives From Suburbia

Aww… I hope he never changes his number.

  • LiteralDan

This reminds me of the book Guess How Much I Love You. But I’m pretty sure “infinity” beats both Little and Big Nut-Brown Hair. (NOT “Brown Nut-Hair”, by the way… it’s really important to not make that mistake, repeatedly.)

  • Corey~living and loving

♥ yeah….that is something to cherish.

I have a giveaway over at my place. come on by!

  • meleah rebeccah

Awwwwwwwww. I would never get tired of hearing that either.

  • AlisonH

What a sweetie. (And thus the human race continues after all… Cuteness wins!)

OMG. I had a boyfriend who had a thing for 137 (because completely by coincidence it had been his house number and was on his license plate). so he contaminated me with the thrill of seeing 137 or its permutations and I would FREAK when I’d wake up in the middle of the night at it was 1:37 am or 3:17 am etc…
