Happy Barfday

posted by Momo Fali on April 23, 2010

My husband’s birthday was Tuesday. One of his favorite meals is beef stroganoff made from a family recipe. It’s the same stroganoff he ate when he was growing up and since he’s creeping up on 40, I thought it best to try and make him feel like a kid again. Also, does anyone else feel that I’m aging myself by talking about stroganoff? Oh good, everyone then.

After work on Tuesday, I managed to straighten up the house, wrap presents and make dinner. My husband got off work early so he could celebrate with the kids before an evening meeting and once 6:00 pm rolled around, the whole family was hungry and the table was set for a nice, family meal.

Until my son sat down, saw my creation and said, “Ew! Throw up!”

Hmmm? Maybe that's why my son won't eat stroganoff either. (I love it, over egg noodles? Delish!)

Big fan of the strog, but I do eat it blind folded…quite the clean UP afterwards…not popular with TLW…KWIM?

At first I was thinking it looked more like canned dog food, but after I cliecked through from my reader and looked closely, yep, barf. But still, isn't it just marevlously tasty comfort food?

In my experience, it's the meals that look the worst that taste the best!

There is a reason why that is called "shit on a shingle". At least it tastes yummy!!

Oh wow, that picture brought back some bad memories as a child. Although I kinda like it, I just have bad memories,,,

I'm sure it tasted a lot better than it looked.

I've never been a fan of stroganoff. I'm with the boy! LOL!

I'm sure it SMELLED better than it looked, too.

Much better than the mashed-up peas you'll be serving him years from now, anyway.

LOL…sorry but I can relate i made stroganoff for the first time ever last week….i got the same reaction!
    Happy BDay to your man!

It certainly looks like *something*, although barf isn't the first thought that comes to mind. 😉

Did the little goober eat it?

I ADORE stroganoff. It's one of my favorites!!
I will never be able to eat it again without thinking of vomit.

Happy Belated Birthday to the husband!

My stroganoff usually looks like that too. Thank goodness it tastes so dang good. Creeping up on 40…ppffttt. 40 rocks! Well, that's what I keep telling myself every day.

Personally, the dish looks yummy!! I hope you post the recipe…I've been on the prowl for a good beef stroganoff recipe for a while!! Pretty please…with throw up on top???

    :o)

OMG… I do love stroganoff, but that is the reason I don't make it. It is so, so unattractive. I don't think anyone else in my family would eat it.

    I'm with the kid.
Don't take my opinion seriously though. I am uber picky about what goes over these gums. My family mocks me regularly because of it.

Kids and brown food in general.

And you know, it took me the longest time to figure this out, but about the third time I put a strange dish in front of the kids, if I didn't make a fuss over their pushing it away (only no insulting it allowed–and believe me, they did and I had to reiterate that rule.) But if I didn't give them an emotional reaction at all, just put it out there, the third time it suddenly morphed into normal food in their minds and they simply helped themselves and scarfed it down.

The first time my youngest ate salmon like that it was all I could do not to have my eyes bug out of my head. Shhhh, don't react…!

I must be old, too, because I just learned how to make the stroganoff sauce…. (cue happy music). My children call it barf stroganoff… Oh well…

It does look like my dog's recent vomit, but I bet it was delicious.
My husband calls it "stroke me off". Because you know, he's a 12 year old in a man's body.

It's not the prettiest meal, true, but one of the tastiest.

My 6 year old regularly makes comments like that. When I serve hers I put the meat/sauce in a bowl and the noodles on top. It all goes down the same way, and we don't have to put up with 'this looks like vomit' comments.

It does look so appetizing– I'm sure it tasted delicious though!

I've been deprived. I've never had stroganoff. Don't like the way it looks, but I'd try it since most say it's delicious. So next time I come to your house, will you serve this? 🙂

40!? Thanks for making me feel over the hill…I'll be 45 in two days, ugh…that dish looks yummy, oh never mind, I just put my glasses on, and on second thought… 🙂
