Random Realizations: Ohio Winter Edition

posted by Momo Fali on February 24, 2011

1.  If you have never heard of SAD (Seasonal Affective Disorder), then you must not live in Ohio.  We invented it.

2.  Not really, but we could have.

3.  Vitamin D supplements don’t make up for the missing sunshine, no matter how much you take.

4.  And, don’t take too much or it will lead to a different disorder, entirely.

5.  Don’t let Mother Nature fool you when she orders up 65 degree temperatures in mid-February.

6.  Because it only lasts long enough for things to start thawing.

7.  And, for your dog to start rolling in poop and in dead animals that have been laying under a bed of snow for months.

8.  But, of course, it’s too cold to bathe your dog with a hose.

9.  Which is when you will seriously consider taking her to the car wash.

10.  There is no doubt, however, that you would let your dog roll in just about anything, and you would put up with the cold and the Vitamin D overload, if you could just see a blue sky again.

11.  Because, really Ohio?  This perpetual gray is getting pretty old.

Really. It looks just like my header.

(Haha! LOOKED like my header. I changed it back to the color of sunshine just for @melisalw and @SarahinMI!)

I wish I could send you some of our Florida sunshine. Hoping spring comes your way very soon.

We also had a 65 degree day last Friday. That was just a mean tease from Mother Nature!

You have no idea how many people have blogged about the dog poop in their yards that’s just breaking through the surface of snow. And how many northerners are scared to death of the first real thaw when the temps rise, and stay risen, and the poop stench can be smelled far south of the Mason Dixon Line. Be afraid. Be very afraid.

For the record, I would like to say that the poop is not in my yard. We pick it up right away, but at the park…ick.

Isn’t there a dog wash attached to the self-service car wash down by Aladdin’s/Giorgio’s/La Patrona/Lavash?

    • Momo Fali

Amie, could you be more specific with the location?

  • Cris

Can totally relate over here in Indiana. So. Sick. Of. Gray.

  • Andrea (Lil-Kid-Things)

I have a room at the NC Moms Conference at Ocean Isle Beach. Hop in the car now and come be my roomie again!

    SAD sucks.
Have you looked into getting a light box? I’ve heard they help a LOT.

Spring is riiiiight around the corner…hang in there!!

  • Bean

I laughed when I saw your header, since it mimics the view out my window.

  • Heather

Indiana sucks too. Right now it is “Icing” out. WASN’T IT JUST 60 DEGREES? what even.

    i am OVER winter.

    *shakes fist*

And just when you get sick of snow, it turns to solid days of rain just to make it even more depressing. At least snow looks kinda pretty at first. Rain never looks good.

But hey, we love Ohio, right? Right???

    You painted a lovely picture.
One of the car washes in our town has a dog wash section. I think you need that!

  • Sarah

Friends swear by 30 minutes under a sun lamp every day from November to March. And I agree that there isn’t much worse than thawing dog poo, ugh. It was below zero here in MN again this morning – nasty return to winter after temps in the 50s a week ago.

If Ohio invented SAD, then Seattle invented DEPRESSED. I know how Charlie Brown used to feel when he had that little black cloud over his head because we LITERALLY have one over our heads from January to April.

We have that too here in Seattle. I’m suspended in a bubble of anticipation for Spring!

Oh man, we are having the same issues here in NJ. UGH.

Here, come here, when we moved here the husband’s offer letter on the job promised “No home delivery of snow.” Sun, that we’ve got, mixed with ocean fog every morning that burns away by mid-afternoon. Usually.

Born and raised in Buffalo, NY…I totally get what you are saying.

I could never live any further north than I do now. I hate the cold.

Your few points about the dog reminded me of the book, “If You Give a Mouse a Cookie.” Maybe there’s a book idea in there somewhere.

    Seriously!
I had no idea that the middle of Ohio would be so overcast all the time.
I really fell into a serious case of SAD this winter, no motivation for anything.
At least when we lived in Chicago, the sun would shine during the winter every once in a while. Granted, it would be 15 below zero, but the sun would be out.
