My 10-Day Juice Fast

posted by Momo Fali on March 12, 2013

Since the 60-day Fitness Challenge has ended, I’ve decided that I need a new goal. Sure, I have a 5K coming up, but that’s not until September. According to my trainer, I should be able to run a 10K by then. Though, this is the same guy who thinks it’s perfectly normal for people to be in pain so severe they can’t straighten their arms.

We know I can do the vegan thing. It’s been over a year that I removed animal products from my diet in order to lower my cholesterol without meds.

I’ve been told the next step in my journey to good health (and pretty much the sole reason why I haven’t lost much weight) is giving up wheat. This won’t be easy for me. And, to be clear, removing beer from my diet is not on the table. I’m talking about cereal, bread, tortillas, but not beer. M’kay?

In addition, I’m bored with what I’ve been able to do with fruits and vegetables. It’s time to mix things up, so to speak.

Some people are going to think I’m crazy, and by “some people” I am specifically referring to my husband. But, this juice machine is going to be my new best friend.

If my friends and family think I’m a pain in the butt because I’m a vegan, just wait until I tell them that I’m drinking nothing but juice for the next 10 days! Oh, and water. And, coffee. And, beer. But, other than that…just juice! *cue jazz hands*

The idea behind this challenge is to make sure I’m getting the nutrients I need by infusing my dietary intake with new flavors and combinations and do it at the same time that I’m trying to give up wheat. Maybe I won’t miss it as much that way.

After 10 days, I will continue to drink juice and slowly add in beans, rice, nuts, and oats.

This morning’s breakfast was delicious! Red pepper, carrots, lemon, and grapefruit. Those gritty things at the top of the glass are chia seeds which I added for protein. Sprouted green hair coming out of my head will just be a bonus.

So, wish me luck! I’m going to need it once my husband finds out that I bought a juicer!

I put chia seeds in a lot of things when i bake, and also in my (almost) daily oatmeal…but clearly oatmeal’s not an option on a juice fast. Let me know how it goes. I’ve always wanted to try one, but I’m afraid I’ll be starving???

Do me a favour – watch your calories because it can be really easy not to get enough calories in a day with a juice fast. Ketosis is also a very real possibility.

Be careful and safe, ok? Juice fasts worry me.

You can tell Sassymonkey that you will make up the calories with all the beer! Just kidding! Kinda!

I hate juicer juice. It makes me want to barf. BUT I love smoothies! And you get the fiber that way! I just blogged about it, but I have way more to say now that I’m a few days into it. I’m drinking 2.5 pints of fruit/veggie/water smoothies a day with some nuts and oats in place of breakfast and lunch. I’m then eating normal dinners. I too need to lay off the wheat, but I LOVE IT SO MUCH.

Good beer only has 5 ingredients, not wheat: barley, malt, water, yeast and hops. So don’t worry.

There are some interesting studies showing a link between health and sitting more than 8 hours a day. So you might not need to change your diet, but get a standing or walking desk. I’m trying to stand up at least 3 hours of the workday.

As of yesterday I am cutting out bread, pasta, rice. We’ll see. Looks like I’m going to be dragging the bike out cause walking bores me, unless I take the camera, then I stop. And stop. And stop…LOL! Keep us posted Momo! XO

Aaron’s been gluten free for four months now – I know he has recommendations for good gluten-free beers.

I am curious about juice fasts but worry I’d be weak and hungry all the time. I’m looking forward to hearing how it goes.

I used to be gluten free! They have some great alternative pastas. And some decent beers.

So excited to hear how the fast goes! I recently bought a juicer and I love it! I haven’t tried a fast though, so maybe I’ll give it a try!

If you ever come to the South bay in California you have to go to Lyfe Kitchen. You will love it. Vegan option, gluten-free option and all made with food that is Biodynamically farmed. YUM!

I did 3 days and that was plenty! !0..wow!

So far so good! Check with me in 48 hours, though!

Have you seen the movie Fat, Sick and Nearly Dead? It is about a guy who did a 40 day juice fast. It was inspiring and really got me thinking about what I ate. Good luck and stay safe!

Congratulations on starting a Juice Fast! I’m a Juice Cleansing coach and can definitely say they’re absolutely incredible!

10 days is a LONG TIME for that. Just be careful!!
I admire your stick-to-it-ness on your health goals though: if anyone can do it, you can! (Did I already say to be careful?)

Can’t wait to hear how it goes!

Hahahha! My hubby was very frightened when he saw that I was juicing my breakfast as well. You’re inspiring me to stick with it as well.

    Thank you!

I tried no-wheat and failed miserably. Let me know how it goes for you. I pray you are successful, if that’s what you need to do. Isn’t figuring out what we should be eating a pain? I so learned it all wrong for Day 1. The good news – we have a Pope. 🙂

Damn, woman! Good luck! I could never survive on 10 days of juice!
